Photographic manipulation

Suffragette Jalopy for Scott Foresman

This was produced quickly on tight deadline from a great black and white photograph. I worked all night on this one, meticulously establishing the clipping paths around the jalopy, and around what I determined to be the red and the blue elements of the photo. Then these two areas were carefully colored to make an interesting photograph into a striking image. The original is much larger.

Churchman Island & Where's Curt?

A group of old friends gather every year for a week of sun and fun. A certain charismatic fellow had been the organizer for seven years. To commemorate his retirement, Charlie Seymour, of SeymourMusic, and I conspired to take photographs that would be suitable for compositing. I pulled all the pieces together to create two large illusory photographs.

Where's Curt? is a treat for all the regular attendees, who find themselves in a 22" photograph with a large number (eight, by my count) of their fearless leader — who also appears giant, ghostly and vigilant above his beloved flock. Looks a bit Gable-like, eh? Unfortunately, the full value of the humor here is bundled in a host of insider's jokes.

Churchman Island, on the other hand, is one that gets laughs from complete strangers. The biggest challenge with this one was in creating the illusion of distance. Hat's off to Curt for his enthusiastic participation, inspired (as always) performance and a wonderful seven years in the sun.

Hot Potato PhilWhy

A good friend had the good sense to have a wonderful black & white photographer at his wedding. This is a series of photographic manipulations designed to compensate for a grave error on the part of the brother of the groom — he failed to show up for the group photo. But with his amused cooperation — and that of the photographer — I was able to toss him back into the fray. Well ... just his head.
