I have carried on many debates and aired many opinions over
the years. I've been called many names for the confidence
with which I present my contentions. But, as I have reminded
many, I stick to the point at hand. And I have admitted the
few times when I've been wrong always adopting the
victorious view thenceforth. I've managed to make these occurrences
few because I subscribe to the notion that one's first responsibility
before stepping into debate is to to ensure that one is armed
with an objective appraisal of the issue at hand. Demanding
an absence of folly in one's mind and soul saves a lot of
embarassment. To hasten the demise of whatever folly remains,
I make my argument in a way that will make it a pleasure for
a true lover of debate to feed me my hat. When my adversary
wins the argument, I win the truth. Agreeing to disagree is
a double loss. And (although this section is not set in the
context of business) in business it's a sure path to trouble.
